CNN -
In August 2019, Saul Malek understood he 'd strike rock bottom.

His girlfriend had broken up with him, friendships had gone south, and he had cash problems.

" I discovered all my memories were actually gambling associated," Malek explains to CNN Sport.

" If I went out with my sweetheart and some good friends, I 'd tell her at the end of the night, 'This is a terrific night since this bet won, and I was up this amount.'"

In a desperate effort to reanimate his relationship with his girlfriend, Malek states he informed his Gamblers Anonymous mentor that he would not place a bet for six months. Almost 5 years later, Malek still hasn't bet.

' This is simple'
The billions of dollars that were banked on this year's Super Bowl, the millions that will be wagered on Saturday's Kentucky Derby and stories like Malek's have brought into sharp focus the US' complicated relationship with sports gambling.

It was in his college sophomore year that Malek says he was introduced to a prohibited accountant.

" It was certainly dirty in regards to the legality and authenticity of all of it, but I didn't actually care," he said.

" I delighted in wagering with the bookmakers since I liked understanding that I was winning versus a real individual, that you understand I was better than them."

Malek strongly remembers his very first $10 win.

" It was a total warping of my mind," stated Malek. "I know what I'm doing. This is easy, this is great."

However, $10 bets ended up being $100 wagers, which quickly changed into stakes involving countless dollars.

" When I really started losing and going after the losses, I had an awareness that it was uncomfortable," confessed Malek.

" But I believe I was in such a mode of trying to resolve whatever that I didn't see it as actually much of a problem."

It wasn't till his moms and dads discovered "questionable people messaging him," and his school grades ending up being an issue that Malek, who is now a public speaker on betting awareness, knew he was in too deep.

A 'enormous surge'
It remained in 2018 that the US Supreme Court struck down a 1992 federal law, which had actually forbidden most states from enabling sports betting.

Fast forward to 2024 and the gambling industry is engrained in US sports culture with leagues, franchises, gamers and networks now partnering with betting organizations.

Nevada was the only state able to offer sports betting in 2018, however it's now legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia, with active legislation surrounding sports betting in a further six states.

In February, when the Super Bowl was staged, Americans bet $10.49 billion on sports, a 24.8% year-over-year increase, according to the American Gaming Association's (AGA) video gaming income tracker.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, the AGA was predicting a record 67.8 million American adults (26%) would wager an estimated $23.1 billion on the occasion, a 35% boost from 2023.

And, overall, almost $120 billion in legal bets were made in 2015.

" In America, as long as there have actually been sports to bet on, people have been betting on sports," AGA senior vice president Joe Maloney told CNN Sport in an interview.

" Democrats and Republicans, if there's something that they might settle on, prohibited wagering was currently taking place."

Maloney says the 2018 decision was an opportunity to bring betters into the legal market - and for political leaders to catch tax profits.

In 2023, more than $11 billion in state taxes were brought into state coffers.

According to the US Census, New york city state is by far the leader in taxes gathered.

" There was this rush by state government, rather honestly, to take advantage of betting earnings and the gaming market was delighted to play along," Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), told CNN Sport.

The legal market
It's approximated that 2.5 million adults in the US "satisfy the criteria for a severe gambling problem in a given year," according to the NCPG.

Maloney maintains that a person of the benefits of legalized sports gaming is the procedures that are put in location to assist those who experience gambling dependencies.

" The illegal market has grown for probably four to 5 decades in this country ... and there was never any problem betting resources at any severe level to support those that are demonstrating bothersome behavior," Maloney states.

" We're truly pleased with the truth that ... there's more cash being devoted to problem betting in this nation than there ever has been."

Whyte states he is less persuaded.

" We've seen no proof of that whatsoever," states Whyte when inquired about legalized sports betting assisting suppress gambling addiction. "We believe the threat has actually gone up by about 30%."

" I remain in the District of Columbia right now. The mayor just recently cut each and every single penny of public financing to avoid and deal with betting problems.

So right where the AGA and the National Council for Problem Gambling lies - the nation's capital - they eliminated all public funds for problem gaming," includes Whyte.

' The speed of innovation'
From LeBron James' NFL collaboration with DraftKings to ESPN introducing a main sportsbook, it is ending up being progressively difficult to view sport without betting being part of the seeing experience.

A 2023 NCAA study surveyed young people aged 18-22. It states that amongst those who had seen sports gambling advertisements, 52.8% said it made them more likely to wish to gamble.

Among higher threat gamblers as many as 80% state the ads they have seen make them more most likely to gamble.

Whyte states that these advertisements aren't too much of a concern if you're not in the higher threat groups however the connection amongst those who are is concerning.

Maloney counters that advertising is important in taking gamblers from illegal to legal markets.

" Advertising is very important upon markets being opened lawfully and managed to interact to betters that there is this opportunity to now wager in the legal market," stated Maloney.

The increase of advertisements and promos is something that concerns NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

" I reside in the New York market. It's constant in regards to promos for individuals to wager on sports," stated Silver just recently.

" I worry likewise about youths. It's, of course, illegal for young individuals to bank on sports," included the commissioner.

Ramon Zelaya, the moderator of Reddit's problem gambling online forum, concurs.

" The surge of sports betting has actually caught the attention and engagement of more youthful bettors. Folks starting in their teens," Zelaya informed the NCPG.

" I've had 16-year-olds post on the subreddit. I have seen that the college age market tends to gravitate towards sports betting, online poker, trading cryptocurrency, that sort of thing."

Despite Silver's hand-wringing over the proliferation of sports wagering ads, the NBA in March stated it had associated Sportradar to provide NBA League Pass users with the possibility to take a look at live chances throughout video games.

" Where sports wagering is legal, users can opt-in to have the benefit of seeing and picking bets directly on NBA League Pass. When ready to place a bet, they are directed to FanDuel or DraftKings, the NBA's main betting partners, through a seamlessly ingrained link," the Sportradar declaration read.

Malek believes that this lack of friction threatens.

" Having it right there, truly made it so convenient that I was able to simply click a button," he expained.

Maloney, nevertheless, indicate the chances technological innovation offers the betting market and its clients.

" I believe the pace of innovation right now, particularly as it relates to fan engagement and wagering, and in play wagering and live betting will continue to increase," said Maloney.

" I think that the accept with leagues, groups and market partners will continue," he included.

Whyte's concern is that a lot of sports wagerers "when they get deep into in play [wagering] have no concept of the true chances and that it's nigh impossible to compute the true chances within the needed 30 seconds you require to position an in-play bet.

The betting market also points to its ongoing emphasis on "responsible gambling," stating three quarters of what it refers to as "traditional Super Bowl wagerers" report seeing an accountable gambling message in the last year, up from 71% in 2023.

Sporting stability
Recently the NBA banned Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter from the league after an examination found that the 24-year-old had actually broken betting guidelines, the league stated.

The NBA stated its examination discovered that Porter had "violated league guidelines by disclosing confidential info to sports bettors, limiting his own involvement in one or more video games for betting functions, and banking on NBA video games."

With the rise of sports betting, this could become more common and it's something that NBA commissioner Silver is concerned by.

"It's a primary sin, what he's implicated of, in the NBA, and the supreme extreme option I have is to ban him from the video game," said Silver.

"There's absolutely nothing more serious, I believe, around this league when it comes to gambling and wagering on our video games, which is a direct gamer involvement," included Silver.

Porter didn't react to CNN's demand for comment when his restriction was revealed.

In late March, the NBA said it was "checking out" abnormalities including prop bets relating to Porter. Reportedly there were 2 specific video games in which DraftKings Sportsbook flagged prop bets involving Porter in its daily wagering insights.

A DraftKings spokesperson told CNN after Porter was prohibited: "We have no comment on this story. In basic, it is crucial to keep in mind that a person of the many benefits of legal and regulated sports betting is that sports betting identify and report suspicious activity and the stability of sport is for that reason protected in a way that does not exist in the prohibited market."
